Murals Belong Everywhere
When thinking about murals and public art, there are probably a few common placements that come to mind. However, as a mural artist, I’m always pushing myself and my clients to think outside the box about where murals can go and who can benefit from them. Murals and public art are highly beneficial for stimulating creativity, creating feelings of pride and belonging, and offering inspiration and joy. Name an everyday place where you wouldn’t want to experience that!? Exactly! Keep reading so I can prove to you that murals have places not only in businesses and communities but also in surprising places like your home or church, too!
The Benefits of Murals in Your Home
Art in the home is common, but custom mural art is less common. However, I would argue that your home is one of the most special places you can place a mural. Ideally, home is where you’re free to relax in a place that is the boldest, brightest expression of your true self. Home is a place to recharge, reenergize, and reinspire. All of this sounds like a bunch of reasons to consider a mural in your home to me!
If you’re someone who likes to entertain, an artistic mural in a common area in your home could be a forever conversation starter, as well as a welcoming reminder that your home is a safe space for the people you love. If you prefer to keep the beauty to yourself, consider a calming mural in your bedroom or bathroom. Hotel luxury at home? I support it!
The Benefits of Murals in Your Business
In addition to creating a visually pleasing and inviting environment in your business with murals, there are several fiscally strategic reasons for investing in a mural for your business as well. If your high-quality mural is on the exterior of your business, you create an opportunity for your business to become a landmark that is known locally or even regionally! With the ever-growing popularity of social media, it’s quite common for visitors and tourists to seek out photo-worthy locations. If that photo opportunity is attached to your business, the likelihood of passersby popping in for a shop after taking a photo with your mural dramatically increases. As an added benefit, the likelihood of them inadvertently marketing your business increases as well if they post the mural and tag your business or even the location. Some of the best marketing outcomes still come from referrals and word of mouth because they automatically contain the “know, like, and trust” factor that most people need to spend money at a new business.
Murals in your business aren’t only good for your customers, they boost morale and help with talent retentio, too! Read more in our recent blog, Creating a Healthy and Productive Work Environment Through Art.
The Benefits of Murals in Your Church
Welcoming and inspiring place for worship, reflects values and mission
Installing a mural in a place of worship can provide many of the same benefits as community murals since faith-based organizations are, in fact, their own communities in many ways. Having a mural in or on your church is a great way to share your values, mission, or principles and welcome attendees and visitors alike into your church. This form of non-verbal communication can help tremendously in helping people feel welcome, safe, and interested in finding out what your church has to offer.
The Benefits of Murals in Your Community
Murals can be found in communities for a large variety of reasons, but the data is overwhelmingly consistent that they create positive improvements to the communities that they inhabit. Murals create feelings of pride and investment in residents who, in turn, tend to show more support and appreciation for their community. Often, local artists, like me at The Tipton Creative, are commissioned for the design and painting process. This improves “local” enthusiasm as well. Sometimes, community leaders even involve residents in the input for the design to garner more engagement and pride for the community.
No matter the reason for a public mural, they’re undeniably powerful ways to build community, improve residents' sense of belonging, and make your neighborhood a more attractive place to encourage visitors and new businesses to come and be a part of the action. In fact, many of the murals we’ve created around Ashland, KY, have become exactly that!
If you’re ready to add a mural to your neighborhood, home, or organization, please reach out to me to discuss your project. I’d love to help you create something impactful that can be enjoyed for years to come.
